What to make with your farmer’s market loot!

WARNING!!!  You are about to read an unhealthy recipe. 🙂  Please don’t fall off the health bandwagon, but do try this during farmer’s market season.  It is my favorite comfort food!

Grandma’s “brown gravy” with garden veggies

Market or garden veggies:

bunch of carrots, sliced
6 red potatoes, sliced into cubes
2 dozen green/yellow beans, ends trimmed, sliced in half
3 medium kohlrabi, peeled and diced
1/2 package frozen peas

Combine the above and cover with 1 inch water and bring to boil,(you can add 2 beef bouillon cubes at this point for added flavor if you wish) simmer until all veggies have softened to liking. Reserve 2-3 cups of the veggie water for sauce and drain.

Here comes the unhealthy part, the sauce~
1/2 c butter
1/2 c flour
1/2 tsp sea salt
1/2 tsp cracked pepper
2 cups veggie water

In pan, melt butter and gradually add the flour, stirring or whisking continuously. Once combined add salt and pepper and slowly add the veggie water 1/2 cup at a time until sauce becomes desired thickness.
Add above sauce to the softened veggies and serve hot with warm bread. (and maybe some grilled chicken for a little added protein)  Delicious.
